My Beloved Rome!

On our way to Rome we passed Sicily.....

And the famous volcanic island, Stromboli....

We then arrived into Civitavecchia for our day in Rome. We had decided to take the transfer into Rome and do a day on our own.   On the way out we passed this fortress designed by Michelangelo.....

We drove into the city through these familar umbrella trees......

We were then dropped off at St. Peter's Square.......

After some overpriced souvenir shopping we took a taxi to my favorite part of Rome in the center, Piazza Navona.....

Here is where the famous Four Rivers Fountain is located.......

As well as my favorite church in all of Rome, St. Agnes Agnone, St. Agnes in Agony.  It is stunning church that marks the place St. Agnes was martyred and is not to be missed if in Rome (it is a stunner, really jaw dropping interior).......

After walking around the square looking at some art we stopped for a cheap lunch of pizza and wine then started walking toward my most favorite area, Campo Dei Fiori.

Before entering the square we stopped at Carolyn's favorite place, the gelato shop......

Then it was on to the very busy Camp dei Fiori.  It was filled with vendors selling all manner of food, wine and textiles.  It is open every day and frequented by locals and tourists alike.  I love this market having spent 9 days at an apartment down the street during a stay a couple years ago.  Every day I would go buy something for lunch or dinner, all fresh and all delicious.  Breads, cheeses, vegetables, you name it......

After Carolyn bought some wine and I bought some kind of mushroom and walnut spread to take home we stopped at the best bakery in Rome for something to take back to the ship.

On our way to the taxi stand we passed by the place where Caesar was assassinated.......

On the way back, as we crossed the river, we saw Castel San Angelo....

And this beautiful Madonna......

Our taxi drove us directly to the beautiful St. Peter's Square where we rested under the portico before catching our bus back to the ship.

Oh how I love Rome and all of Italy!!!
