The New Forest, Southern England

Well I made it to England and we are staying for a few days until I catch my transatlantic for NYC.  Carolyn flew home and Bonnie is leaving on Sunday.

Soooo, Bonnie and I booked a 3 hour tour of the New Forest, someplace we have never been.  Unfortunately it has been a very hard winter for England so the forest is a bit late to recover from the harsh winter but it is interesting.

The first thing we learned was about the wild horses and donkeys.  Apparently the forest has all these animals that belong to someone, somewhere but roam free.  They are everywhere and they have the right of way.....

I never knew there was such a place.  They live off the land and pretty much have the run of the forest....

Same with the deer.  They are everywhere and have these gigantic antlers and come in a variety of species, even white ones......

The animals have zero fear as you can see by this inquisitive donkey.......

There are a few towns dotted around like Brockenhurst, Beulieu and Burley.....

The latter being the home of the famous witch Sybil Leek.  We were asked if we wanted to stop and we said no thanks!

Our one history lesson this day was about the son of William the Conqueror who was "accidentally" shot in the chest with an arrow while hunting.  It was supposedly an accident but the shooter was the best archer in the country and took off for France right after it happened.  When he came back, life went on as if nothing had happened.  It appears to have been a "hit" that no one cared about!

Tomorrow we have a full day and are off to see Chartwell, Churchill's home and Arundel Castle, home to the Dukes of Norfolk!
