It was built in the 13th century to thank God for a victorious battle and is stunning.....
The interior has incredible arches and carving......
And the cloisters are absolutely beautiful.....
Then it was on to Nazare and their famous cliffs. There is upper Nazare perched above the sea which is the old town with its pretty church square.....
And this tiny chapel built for Our Lady of Nazare......
It is beautifully adorned with Portuguese tiles.....
And it is here that the Virgin was said to appear........
This Cross and marker was built and dedicated by Vasco da Gama, the famous explorer......
The old town is also famous in surfing circles. It is here that the largest wave ever recorded was ridden by a world famous surfer name McNamara. The wave was measured at 100 meters!!!
Then we visited the newer, lower village that is directly on the ocean.....
It is a pretty little place with all the whitewashed buildings.....
This was our lunch stop at a traditional, local family restaurant.....
Then we rode along the coast admiring the beauty of the area......
These little houses are former windmills turned into holiday homes......
Our final stop was Obidos, a tiny medieval village dating back to Roman times.
It had a beautifully tiled entry, narrow streets and lanes......
Adorable little houses and medieval church.......
And of course the fort...........
After a very long and tiring day we got back to the ship with zero time to spare. We walked up the gangplank and they pulled it up right behind us!!!!!! Whew, that was close!
